Begin with a consultation
Your first conversation is an opportunity to explain your concerns, health history, previous treatment, and goals. A consultation is not a commitment to receive care. You can ask questions and decide whether to proceed with an examination or arrange it for another time.
Plan for your appointment
Our existing appointment guidance recommends allowing at least 45 minutes for the examination. Confirm the time needed for your particular visit with the office. Bring a medication list, relevant medical history, prior imaging and reports, and questions you would like to discuss.
What an examination may include
Depending on your concern, the doctor may assess neck movement and relevant orthopedic and neurological findings. Upper cervical evaluation considers the craniocervical junction (CCJ) alongside the rest of your history and examination. Findings help guide recommendations but cannot guarantee a complete explanation of every symptom.
For adults and older children, NeckCare is part of our initial examination. It measures neck range of motion, joint position error (how accurately the head returns to a target position), and sensorimotor control (how accurately head movement is guided). These results provide a baseline for assessing neck function and tracking change over time; they do not by themselves diagnose the cause of symptoms.
CBCT and MRI when clinically indicated
Imaging is selected to answer a specific clinical question. CBCT and MRI provide different types of information and have different safety considerations. Existing studies may be useful; additional imaging is not a routine requirement for every patient.
Review findings and decide together
After the examination, discuss what the findings suggest, what remains uncertain, and whether care here or referral elsewhere is appropriate. Ask about goals, treatment options, risks, alternatives, costs, and how progress will be reassessed. You are free to take time before deciding.
