TMJ, Bite Concerns, and the Upper Cervical Spine
Jaw pain, clicking, limited opening, headaches, and neck discomfort can overlap. At Apex Chiropractic in Neptune Beach, we assess the neck and upper cervical region when jaw symptoms occur alongside neck pain or restricted movement. We coordinate with dental and medical care for the jaw and bite.
TMJ disorder and malocclusion are different
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) helps the jaw open, close, and move side to side. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can involve the joint, chewing muscles, or both. Malocclusion describes how the teeth fit together. A bite difference does not by itself explain a person’s jaw pain, and there is no single cause or treatment for TMD.
Why assess the jaw and neck together?
Jaw movement, chewing muscles, head position, and neck movement can affect how a person experiences discomfort. The trigeminal nerve carries sensation from the jaw, while the upper cervical region also provides sensory input about head and neck position. Research finds that jaw and neck disability can occur together in people with TMD, but that association does not show that a neck finding caused a bite problem. If you notice jaw symptoms with neck pain or restricted head turning, it makes sense to describe both during an evaluation.
What has research measured?
In a small 2017 preliminary study, 11 adults had posture and computerized bite-force measurements before and after a NUCCA upper cervical adjustment. Six showed a measurable change in left-to-right bite-force balance; the changes did not all move toward a more balanced pattern. The study measured short-term contact forces, not correction of malocclusion or relief of TMJ pain. It also tested NUCCA, a different method from the Knee-Chest care we use at Apex. Larger controlled studies are needed to know whether these observations lead to meaningful patient outcomes.
Where an upper cervical assessment fits
We review your symptom history, jaw and neck complaints, movement, and relevant prior dental or medical findings. If a cervical neuromusculoskeletal concern is present, we can discuss whether upper cervical chiropractic care is appropriate for that part of the picture. Evidence does not establish that an atlas adjustment corrects malocclusion or reliably treats TMD. We do not move teeth or replace dental diagnosis.
When to involve other clinicians
A dentist or orofacial pain specialist can evaluate tooth contact, jaw joint disease, and oral health. Seek prompt medical or dental care for trauma, a locked jaw, significant swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Many TMD approaches begin with reversible measures; discuss the risks and alternatives before any treatment that permanently changes the bite.

For adults and older children, NeckCare is part of our initial examination. It measures neck range of motion, joint position error (how accurately the head returns to a target position), and sensorimotor control (how accurately head movement is guided). These results provide a baseline for assessing neck function and tracking change over time; they do not by themselves diagnose the cause of symptoms. On this page, NeckCare does not measure the bite or diagnose a temporomandibular disorder.
