Different headaches need different care

Migraine is a headache disorder that can involve nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Neck discomfort may occur alongside headache, but it does not by itself establish that the neck caused the headache. New or changing symptoms should be discussed with an appropriate medical clinician.

Apex Chiropractic offers a place to discuss upper cervical assessment when headaches occur with neck discomfort or restricted movement. We do not promise to cure migraine or assume that all headache types respond to chiropractic care.

How the upper neck and migraine pain pathways connect

Pain signals from trigeminal and upper cervical structures converge in the trigeminocervical complex, a shared processing region in the brainstem and upper spinal cord. This provides a biological basis for interaction between head pain and neck pain, and for cervical input to contribute to or aggravate migraine symptoms in some people.

Neck pain can also be part of a migraine attack rather than a separate neck disorder. These mechanisms support careful assessment of the upper cervical and craniocervical region when appropriate; they do not establish that a particular alignment finding caused an individual’s migraine or that a specific adjustment will treat it.

Information that helps guide assessment

Bring a record of headache frequency, duration, symptoms, possible triggers, medicines used, and how headaches affect your activities. Tell us about recent injuries, previous diagnoses, imaging, and any changes from your usual pattern. Include symptoms such as visual changes or dizziness.

What the neck examination can contribute

Your history and relevant movement, orthopedic, and neurological findings can help determine whether a cervical concern needs attention or whether further medical evaluation is indicated. An upper cervical image or alignment finding alone does not prove the cause of a headache.

If care is appropriate, discuss measurable goals, reassessment, risks, alternatives, and how it fits with your existing medical plan. Do not stop prescribed migraine treatment on the basis of this page. CBCT and MRI referral is guided by clinical need rather than offered routinely for all headaches.

Headache warning signs

A sudden, extremely severe headache or headache with new weakness, speech difficulty, confusion, or other concerning neurological symptoms needs urgent medical assessment. Call 911 for an emergency. Headache after an injury also requires appropriate assessment.
