Dizziness is a symptom, not a diagnosis

People use “dizziness” to describe spinning, unsteadiness, or feeling faint. Vertigo describes a spinning sensation. These experiences can have different causes and need an appropriate assessment before a care plan is chosen.

At Apex Chiropractic in Neptune Beach, you can discuss dizziness together with any neck discomfort or movement concerns. A cervical examination may be one part of the evaluation, but dizziness alone does not establish that the upper neck is responsible.

The upper neck, proprioception, and balance

Proprioception is your nervous system’s sense of position and movement. Sensory signals from the upper neck, including the craniocervical region, work with vision and the inner ear’s vestibular system to help orient the head and maintain balance. Neck pain, injury, and changes in muscle or joint function can alter this sensory input.

A mismatch between cervical, visual, and vestibular signals is a proposed mechanism by which cervical dysfunction may contribute to dizziness or unsteadiness in some patients. This is often discussed as proprioceptive cervicogenic dizziness. It provides a rationale for considering cervical function when dizziness occurs with neck symptoms.

The mechanism and clinical diagnosis remain debated, particularly for true vertigo. There is no single definitive test, and an abnormal CCJ movement or imaging finding alone does not establish the source of dizziness. Assessment should also consider vestibular, migraine-related, neurological, and other medical causes.

Describe what you experience

Helpful details include whether the sensation is spinning or lightheadedness, how long episodes last, whether position changes trigger them, and whether you notice hearing changes, headache, recent injury, or medication changes. Tell us about previous medical or vestibular evaluations and bring relevant reports.

When another assessment is needed

Inner-ear disorders, migraine, medicines, and other medical conditions can cause dizziness. A medical or vestibular clinician may be the appropriate starting point or part of your care team. We do not present upper cervical chiropractic as a treatment for every type of vertigo or substitute it for a diagnosis.

Persistent, recurring, or concerning dizziness deserves medical attention. New dizziness with weakness, difficulty speaking, a sudden severe headache, or loss of consciousness requires emergency assessment. Call 911 for an emergency.

The role of upper cervical care

If your examination identifies a neck-related concern appropriate for conservative care, discuss the proposed approach, limitations, risks, and alternatives. Progress should be judged by agreed symptoms and function, rather than an assumption that changing alignment will resolve dizziness.

CBCT and MRI are not routine screening tests for all dizziness. Referral depends on the clinical question and examination findings.
