What is the Knee-Chest approach?

Knee-Chest is a named approach within upper cervical chiropractic. Its name refers to patient positioning used as part of the technique. A technique name is a starting point for discussion, not a diagnosis or a guarantee of results. Ask the doctor to explain the exact procedure being proposed and why it may or may not fit your examination findings.

Assessment comes first

The consultation considers your symptoms, medical history, previous injuries, examination findings, and preferences. The craniocervical junction, or CCJ, includes the relationship between the skull and the top two neck vertebrae. A finding in this region does not by itself prove the cause of a symptom.

If imaging is clinically indicated, CBCT and MRI may answer different questions about bony anatomy and soft tissues. Referral and review of existing studies should be guided by the clinical question. Imaging is not an automatic requirement for every consultation.

Questions to ask before care

  • What do the examination findings suggest, and what remains uncertain?
  • What would the proposed treatment involve?
  • What are the expected goals, alternatives, potential risks, and costs?
  • How will progress be measured and when will the plan be reassessed?

Understanding evidence and safety

We do not claim that Knee-Chest is superior to every other approach, cures concussion or migraine, or repairs injured ligaments. Manual treatment can cause temporary discomfort, and serious complications have been reported. Suitability depends on the individual assessment; suspected instability, fracture, or concerning neurological findings require appropriate investigation.
